What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy that circulated through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. The practice of Acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into specified points along meridian lines to influence the restore avalanche to the flow of energy.

In 1997, acupuncture needles were reclassified from "experimental" to "medical device" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA). The National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement in the same year endorsing acupuncture for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as post-operative pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Acupuncture is one of the best known of the alternative therapies. The FDA estimates that people in the United States spend more than $500 million annually on acupuncture treatments. Many people have insurance coverage for acupuncture.

How Acupuncture Works:
There are numerous theories about how acupuncture works. Some of them are:
Acupuncture stimulates the release of pain-relieving endorphins
Acupuncture influences the release of neurotransmitters, substances that transmit nerve impulses to the brain
Acupuncture influences the autonomic nervous system
Acupuncture stimulates circulation
Acupuncture influences the electrical currents of the body

Conditions Treated By Acupuncture:
There are over 2,000 conditions that can be treated by acupuncture. Here are a few:
Migraines and Tension Headaches
Sinusitis
Common Cold
Addictions, such as Smoking
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Meniere's disease
Tennis Elbow
Sciatica
Arthritis
Menstrual Cramps
Fibromyalgia
Low Back Pain
Asthma
Weight Loss
Infertility

What a Typical Acupuncture Treatment is Like:
Before the initial appointment, patients usually complete a health history questionnaire. Through a thorough history and exam , the physician will determine which acupuncture points require stimulation and the patient will begin treatment. Then number of needles used does not correspond with the intensity of the treatment, rather it is the precise placement of the needles that is important.

Upon insertion, the patient may feel a slight sting or prick. Once the needle is inserted, there should be no pain. The patient should feel comfortable during the treatment. If the patient experience pain, numbness, or discomfort they should notify the physician immediately.

Treatment length varies from second to longer than one hour. The typical length is about 20 to 30 minutes. For shorter treatment sessions, other devices can be used. For example, treatments using electrical stimulation of the precise acupuncture points can be done in seconds.

 Bone Density Scan (DEXA Scan):

A safe and painless bone density scan will help identify patients at risk for fractures.

What causes osteoporosis?
Bone is a living tissue that is constantly being broken down and reformed. As a person grows, bone forms faster than it breaks down until it reaches a peak bone mass between the ages of 25 and 35. After age 35, both men and women lose bone at a greater risk than it forms, causing bone loss. Women after menopause start to lose bone at a much more rapid rate than men of the same age. This rapid bone loss is usually due to a decrease in the production of the estrogen hormone. As a greater amount of bone is lost, the bones become porous and brittle. Early detection is the best way to protect against osteoporosis.

How is the bone density scan done?
You will be asked to lie perfectly still on the scan table and your will be able to breathe normally throughout the procedure. A scanner arm will pass over the area of interest, for example, your lower spine or hip. A dual energy beam of x-ray passes through your body and is measured by a detector in the arm. This technology is called Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry or DEXA. DEXA works by measuring the amount of x-ray that are absorbed by the bones in your body. The two x-ray energies allow the machine to tell the difference between bone and soft tissue, giving a very accurate estimation of bone density.

How long will the exam take?
The type and number of scans that are requested by your physician will determine the total length of your appointment. On average, it will take 5 - 10 minutes for each area to be positioned and scanned.

How much radiation is involved?
The amount of radiation from a typical bone density scan is only a fraction of that received from a standard chest x-ray. Or in other words, comparable to the amount received on a transcontinental airline flight. Although this is a very low amount of radiation, always inform the technologist if there is any chance of pregnancy.

Are any special preparation required?
Unless instructed otherwise, eat normally on the day of the exam, but avoid calcium supplements for two hours prior to your appointment. Avoid wearing clothing with metal: sweat suits or other casual attire without zippers or garments are usually acceptable.
If you would like to learn more about this bone-thinning disease that causes serious fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist, or have further questions about the Densitometry Testing, please call 580-924-3400.
An appointment can be made for you.
